Most of your spending will go through your phone. Still, carry a small amount of Chinese yuan (RMB, 人民币) as a back-up. How much depends on your trip, so we don't suggest a figure.
When cash helps
- Your phone's battery dies, or you have no data
- A payment app declines your card
- A small stall, taxi or rural shop only takes cash or a local payment method
- Emergencies
If you want to pay cash and the seller hesitates, politely show your notes and ask "Kěyǐ fù xiànjīn ma?" (Can I pay cash?) — see the phrases.
Where to get it
- Bank ATMs — look for your card's network logo on the machine. Airports and big bank branches are the safest bet.
- Bank counters and official exchange counters at airports — bring your passport.
- Before you leave home — your bank or an exchange office may sell yuan.
Avoid people offering to change money in the street.
